A pilgrimage into the archives of nickel toxicology.

چکیده
It is my great pleasure to address this assem bly of learned scientists on the occasion o f th e F o u rth In te rn a tio n a l C onference on Nickel M etabolism and Toxicology. W hen I seriously sat down to prepare rem arks for this evening’s program , I becam e aghast as I pondered upon the title that I had submitted. How could I presum e to cover such a colossal subject in the course of a brief address? It is true tha t the hazards of exposure to nickel and nickel compounds have been recog nized only within recent decades; how ever, the num ber of research contribu t io n s a n d p u b l ic a t io n s on n ic k e l toxicology that have appeared during the past three decades has been substantial. In my ponderings, I harbored the wish th a t I cou ld call for h e lp from my e s te e m e d frien d s and sc ien tific co l leagues of World War II who instigated many of our early interests in the toxicol ogy of nickel. These em inent scientists are now deceased. At this time may I pay tribute to them and to the early pioneer ing contribu tions of the In ternational N ickel C om pany espec ia lly th ro u g h their Medical Director, J. Gwynne Mor gan; to the U.S. Atomic Energy Com mission and the Rohm and Haas Com pany, — th e two organizations w hich supported our research studies; and to

Effects of dietary nickel on survival and growth of mallard ducklings.
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducklings were fed nickel sulphate in their diet from day one to 90 days of age. Ducklings fed 1,200 ppm nickel began to tremor and show signs of paresis after 14 days of dosage (age) and 71% of this group died within 60 days of age. Birds fed 1,200 ppm nickel weighed significantly less (P less than 0.05) at 28 days of age than birds fed the other diets. Weights of ...
متن کاملChildren's exposure to metals: a community-initiated study.
In 2007, it was shown that the shipping of lead (Pb) through Esperance Port in Western Australia resulted in contamination and increased Pb concentrations in children. A clean-up strategy was implemented; however, little attention was given to other metals. In consultation with the community, a cross-sectional exposure study was designed. Thirty-nine children aged 1 to 12 years provided samples...
متن کاملIncreased metal concentrations in giant sungazer lizards (Smaug giganteus) from mining areas in South Africa.
Environmental contaminants from anthropogenic activity such as mining can have profound health effects on the animals living in adjacent areas. We investigated whether inorganic contaminants associated with gold-mining waste discharges were accumulated by a threatened species of lizard, Smaug giganteus, in South Africa. Lizards were sampled from two mining sites and two control sites. Blood sam...
متن کاملSpiritual Health through Pilgrimage Therapy: A Qualitative Study
Background and Objectives: Going on a pilgrimage for spiritual and religious purposes is not a new phenomenon and can be considered one of the oldest tourism typologies. This form of travel is related to the task social perception, which is stronger than leisure or pleasure. The purpose of this ethnographic study was to study how spiritual well-being is achieved through pilgrimages trips. Meth...
متن کاملComparative developmental toxicity of nickel to Gastrophryne carolinensis, Bufo terrestris, and Xenopus laevis.
The early embryo-larval developmental toxicity of nickel (Ni) to 3 amphibian species, Xenopus laevis (South African clawed frog), Bufo terrestris (southern toad), and Gastrophryne carolinensis (eastern narrow-mouthed toad), was evaluated using a modified FETAX model. Studies were initiated from late blastulae stage (Nieuwkoop and Faber [NF] stage 10 or Gosner stage 12) and completed at a common...
